“If a man vows a vow to the LORD, or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.”
~ Numbers 30:2 ESV
“Be constant and consistent. We often wonder if we are making impact on these boys, but we are when we show up and do what we say we are going to. They are watching us in everything we do, and it is impacting these boys in deep ways.” ~ Mentor Father Mike McNeill
Mentor Fathers and Field Buddies sign an intentional commitment to each other at the start of every mentoring year. Our expectation is that both will honor this commitment to one another, no matter how difficult that might be. Some Field Buddies respond faster than others, but our Mentor Fathers need to hold the line the entire time.

Mike McNeill knows about this firsthand. Their first month of their year one commitment Mike picked up his new Field Buddy Cavan to go through their journey guide, but Cavan hadn’t done it. Mike expressed how sad the situation was. He pulled their commitment out of the glovebox of his truck and had Cavan read it out loud.
“I’m committed but you need to decide if you’re all in or not. I dropped him back off at his home (he lives 15 minutes away) and I went home. I’m barely in the door when the phone rings and Cavan tells me he did his journey guide. My response was, ‘I just want to know if you’re all in?’ He responded, ‘I am all in.’ He has never been late or failed to fulfill a single commitment since. That was over a year ago.”

Cavan grew up with drug addicted parents and experienced the horrors of their lifestyle; a lifestyle that took the lives of both of his parents. Hearing his full story, you might expect to hear of a young man with a heart full of anger towards God, but you’d be wrong.
This young man has a deep love for God and wants those around him to experience Christ firsthand. This comes both because God has protected his heart and because Mike is demonstrating what true commitment looks like.
