Defending the Cause: The Blessing of Being a Mentor Father

“God has used Fathers in the Field to grow me as a Christian man. This ministry has increased my faith and given me countless opportunities for spiritual growth. I’m not doing anything out of the ordinary, I am just being obedient to the call of God to defend the cause of the fatherless.”
~ Todd Kehoe Mentor Father at North Valley Church in Arizona

“Just over three years ago I submitted my application to be a Mentor Father. I was praying for my future Field Buddy while watching all the other Mentor Fathers get paired up. The Church Champion kept encouraging me that God would bring the fatherless boy he wanted me to mentor and to keep praying. Then Elijah came into my life. God paired me up with a 14-year-old fatherless boy with the same funny character traits I have. We are like two peas in a pod, like we have known each other for years. God has been using this mentoring relationship to grow me just as much as He is growing Elijah.

“When I first heard about Fathers in the Field, I was reluctant because I was struggling with anxiety and depression. The reality was I was a very selfish person, always asking how something would benefit or affect me. Pastor challenged me to look past myself to see how God could use me to help a fatherless boy whose needs were greater than my selfishness. I took up the challenge and God has used this ministry to push me out of my selfishness. It has changed me dramatically. My Field Buddy Elijah needs me, he needs the gifts God has given me and God has given me a young man who needs to hear about the Love of God in Christ.

“In the past I spent my time selfishly. Now I spend it intentionally in Scripture and in the life of my Field Buddy. I want to be prepared for the conversations we have about Christ. To be ready to show by example what it means to be a Christian man. This transformation God is doing in me is playing out before my eyes in how God is transforming Elijah. I see the Lord working in him and I know my part in that transformation is my being faithful to God’s command to be a champion of the fatherless.”

Todd’s Challenge:

“Fathers in the Field is not as difficult as you think it’s going to be, but it will change your life for the good. God is calling you to show up, be accountable, invest in the life of a fatherless boy, and share about life and the Lord. I could have stayed selfish and disobeyed the command of God, but I am so glad I answered the call. God has blessed me beyond words over the 2+ years I have been mentoring Elijah. There are so many boys who need this ministry, but it takes men stepping up. Men like me and men like you.

Contact us today to help these boys become the men God created them to be.

Jesus is Lord.
