Defending the Cause: Too OLD to serve?

“At age of 79 I’m beat up and bruised but that has never stopped me from serving.”
~ The experience of Bruce Hutcheon, Mentor Father at The Road Church in Colorado Springs.

Saying that you are too old to serve the Lord and help a fatherless boy is crazy. Looking back on my own life and the investment men made in me, makes not serving impossible.

This is a snapshot of my life. I grew up in a dysfunctional family, but God blessed me with men that led and taught me. These men saw something of value in me and enriched me and kept me on the straight and narrow. I knew from an early age that God had me and would provide what I needed. If those men hadn’t poured into my life and helped me, I don’t know what would have happened to me.

When I heard the presentation for Fathers in the Field my friend Leo looked me in the eyes and said, “this is perfect for you.” I’m retired but I am a full-time caregiver of my wife. Many men would decline helping on that basis alone. Not me! I did my research on the ministry and jumped in without hesitation. I don’t regret a single minute of my time involved in this ministry. By raising your hand and becoming a Mentor Father, you will be just as enriched by the boy as he is by you.

With that as the backdrop of my life how can I say no to investing in the life of a fatherless boy?

My Field Buddy Noshan is unbelievable. On our last service project, the woman we were helping asked Noshan what made this ministry so special. Without missing a beat, he pointed over at me and said, “because that man over there is changing my life.” If that doesn’t grab you then you are missing out. It is giving of your life into making that boy the man that God has created him to be.

Sharing my story is fine, but I want to give a call to action to men.

What is your why?

Why are you serving?

What are you serving?

When you read this ask, “who are the men in my life that made me into the man I am today.” We all have father wounds and there is part of all of us that wants to give time back into the life of a fatherless boy. Fathers in the Field is all about investment and accountability. We sign a yearly commitment to go to church, serve, enjoy God’s creation and work on healing the abandonment wound in the Field Buddy. It’s a partnership. I am accountable to my FB and to God and my FB is accountable to me. All in for that one boy.

No one is “too old” to serve. Contact the ministry today and get started.
